In the Netherlands unpaid household and voluntary work takes over one and a half times more hours than paid work, yet it is not taken into account in National Statistics and little attention is paid to unpaid work in economic science and economic policy. In other industrialized countries a similar situation exist. In developing countries women's contribution to food production and agriculture is not counted nor are their household activities. Time and again International Women's Conferences adopted resolutions, requesting governments and staticticians to quantify women's unrenumerated contribution to agriculture, food production, reproduction and household activities. In this book the author calculates the value of unpaid work over a period of twenty years and analyses how the statistical notion of national income, production, consumption, savings, income distribution etc. would change if the value of unpaid work would be counted in National Statistics. Athough the value of unpaid work is high, its unequal distribution between men and women is a hindrace for women's economic independence. In the last chapter policies to improve women's economic independence are deal with it. Marga Bruyn-Hundt was born in 1931. She studied economics at the University of Amsterdam, taught economics at secundary schools for fifteen years and worked as an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam for twenty years. She published three books and over seventy articles on women's positions in paid and unpaid work. She received several official distinctions for her contributions to women's emancipation. Since 1995 she has lived in Switzerland. Bestel/Order |
