The role of the father is a frequent topic of discussion. Demographical, social, psychological, judicial and biomedical developments have contributed to changes in the conceptions of fatherhood and in fatherhood itself. These changes are taking place in all western countries.

'Changing Fatherhood' was the subject of an international conference held at the University of Tilburg in May 1994. The aim of the initiators, Mirjam van Dongen, Gerard Frinking and Menno Jacobs, was to bring together prominent scientists from different disciplines to put forward their views on various aspects of changing fatherhood. The result was an inspiring, three-day meeting with lectures, workshops and debates. In this book, the editors offer you a selection of the papers and discussions held at the conference. They provide an overview of past and present views on fatherhood from a multidisciplinary perspective.
