Citizenship is a contemporary theme of debate in Latin America. The episodes of dictatorship, the transitions to electoral democracy and the emergence of a plethora of a new social movements brought forth exciting new questions. At the same time, structural adjustement policies in the context of globalization pose challenges that require a rethinking of the inherited concepts of citizenship and the ways in which it is perceived, practiced and experienced. This book provides an up-to-date approach to the citizenship debate from a multidisciplinary and comparative perspective. It brings together a series of original articles that address the multiple dimensions of citizenship with political cultures and the current transformation of the roles of the state. It delves into the historical dimensions of Latin American citizenship, it's transformation and re-interpretations in times of structural adjustement and democratization, and finally, it looks at the questions posed by the emergence of indigenous peoples' movements.
