Plasmodium falciparum malaria remains a major health problem, affecting mainly children and pregnant women. Malaria causes many serious complications in pregnancy. One well-known complication is the increased risk for low birthweight in first compared to later pregnancies for women living under holoendemic conditions for malaria. This phenomenon has been little studied in relation to seasonal or epidemic malaria or El Nino climate changes.
Other adverse birth outcomes of malaria in pregnancy discussed in this thesis include stillbirth, post-partum haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and outcomes in adolescent pregnancies.

This book presents information on P. falciparum malaria in pregnancy and reports new studies and analyses addressing these pregnancy-related problems in the context of seasonal patterns of malaria transmission. It considers the possibility to improve early warning systems for malaria epidemics based on existing data on malaria, rainfall and temperature patterns in a highland area of Tanzania which experiences malaria epidemics.
